The board of directors that has supervised
the Public Education Center and its two news services, National Security and
Natural Resources lost one of our most active and outstanding members this week.
Jack Mitchell was a talented investigative reporter and author before becoming a
public servant working as a Senate staffer. He left Senator Carl Levin’s office
to become an aide to legendary Food and Drug Administration Director David
Kessler. Mitchell did amazing investigative
work on big tobacco working with Kessler. Mitchell spent the last few years at the
National Science Foundation. Because he is heading back to the Senate to be the
Chief Investigator for the Committee on Aging, Mitchell has to give up his
outside board responsibilities to comply with Senate ethics rules. That is PEC's loss and we will do our best to search
for a replacement that brings the same sense of mission Jack
had.

I, along with Jay Gourley of our staff, worked with Jack at CNN’s
original investigative unit in the early 1980’s. I recruited Jack for the Board
long before I became President because I believed he would bring a reporter’s
point of view to the Board as well as have been
tempered in the public sector. Jack has been on the PEC board for nearly
a decade and has been at times brilliant and
always dedicated. We call him Mitch here and we will miss him because he was
always steadfast in his support of PEC’s goal – which is public
education through the mass media. Speaking of the board and staff of PEC
we all send Jack our best and thank him for his generous service.
