Odd goings on were witnessed by our friends at Augusta River Keepers last Thursday morning at the Savannah River Site. The Augusta Chronicle reported that “a dark blue tanker truck parked on the river’s South Carolina side siphoning something out of a boomed-off section of the river, alarmed Savannah Riverkeeper Director Tonya Bonitatibus, who was planning a cruise last week for several dozen from Augusta to Savannah.
“If it’s getting directed into the river, somebody should let people know,” Bonitatibus said.”

The activity was observed near a boat ramp that is used to move material from one of SRS’s most sensitive areas, the old K Reactor, where the National Nuclear Security Administration is storing large amounts of weapons grade plutonium. The area where this activity took place is about a mile from the Southern Companies Plant Vogtle Nuclear generating station.
Highly radioactive material is frequently processed and transported by barge up the river. What makes this a mystery is that an SRS spokesman denied that SRS had deployed any work crews near one of its most sensitive sites.
