Uranium Mining – The Virginia Battleground – Environmental Concerns vs. Corporate Interests

The Virginia General Assembly is expected to vote next year on whether to lift a 30-year moratorium on uranium mining in the state.

The issue has prompted an expensive lobbying campaign by the company that wants to mine a huge deposit known as Coles Hill in Pittsylvania County and an intense fight by environmentalists who want to stop it. The battle has pitted neighbor against neighbor in the county, in south central Virginia, an area known as Southside.

Two Virginians, each offered money to allow uranium mining on their land, personify the debate that is raging through the state. One accepted. The other declined.

Dryden and Middlefield Fracking Bans Tested

DRYDEN, N.Y. — Landslide elections here and in the neighboring town of Caroline Nov. 8 put to rest any doubts that hydrofracking opponents have the upper hand politically in this Finger Lakes community.

But those lopsided victories will ring hollow unless the Town of Dryden prevails in court against Anschutz Exploration Corp.

Inergy’s MARC 1 Pipeline At Crossroads

Severe flooding from Tropical Storm Lee in early September washed away the road that Carol Kafer used to take to work in the rural hills of northern Pennsylvania. Raging waters exposed a petroleum pipeline near the roadbed, complicating repairs and delaying for weeks the reopening to traffic.

At least, Kafer says, the disaster may finally awaken the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to the potential environmental risks of a planned 39-mile natural gas pipeline, called the MARC 1, across her county.
