What A Difference A Day Makes

Yesterday readers awoke to a story in the Los Angeles Times about the United States’ ongoing efforts to negotiate with the Taliban in Afghanistan. It said

After months of quiet, behind-the-scenes diplomacy, officials last week began claiming progress in the effort to begin talks.

On the same morning, readers of The Washington Post learned about a new immigrant to the United States on his way to citizenship: the top Afghan bank official who fled the country for fear of his life because of the corruption surrounding the Kabul Bank. NYT: 6 Americans Killed in Afghanistan

On Sunday morning six American soldiers and dozens of American and Afghan troops were killed by a suicide bomber who detonated a van full of explosives at a joint outpost in southern Afghanistan that had only been open a few days. The Taliban took responsibility for the attack.
