Tuesday marked 1,000 Americans dead in Afghanistan. It took almost seven years for the war to kill the first 500 but less than two to kill the second 500.

The accelerated death toll can be attributed to a resurgent Taliban activity in almost every province, a weak central government incapable of protecting its people, and a larger number of American troops in harm’s way.

Military records show that American troops are dying younger, often right out of boot camp. The average age of troops killed from 2002 to 2008 was 28. Last year it dropped to 26 and this year to 25.

Last fall President Obama ordered a troop increase, with the bulk of the troops expected to be in place by this summer. The increase in troops will certainly lead to an increase in casualties, both American and Afghan.
