In the two-day closed session, members are determining whether to approve a draft plan that would legalize whaling for 10 years in exchange for a gradual drop in the number killed. Countries and non-governmental organizations are divided over the ban. The EU and the International Fund for Animal Welfare are against any return to commercial whaling. The US and New Zealand support the measure. Greenpeace and WWF support a return to commercial whaling provided a number of conditions are met. Michael Hastings of Rolling Stone was granted intimate access to General Stanley McChrystal. During the time he spent with McChrystal and his aides, they scoffed at Vice President Biden, Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, and special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard C. Holbrook. McChrystal also did not speak too highly of Obama.
Some member countries of the International Whaling Commission are meeting in Agadir, Morocco, to discuss whether to lift a 25-year ban on commercial whale hunting.
The United Nations will investigate claims that deported and handcuffed Iraqi asylum seekers were beaten by British security officers during a charter flight to Baghdad. As many as 25 of the 42 deported men were reported to be under detention in Baghdad airport today despite having been screened in advance by Iraqi officials at detention centers in the UK.
