American Military Surge in Afghanistan’s Kandahar Province Having Some Success

Hardened Taliban fighters are leaving Kandahar after the United States and NATO sent 12,000 troops to the province along with 7,000 Afghan soldiers. Some credit the use of a powerful new rocket, the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, that is being launched from the Kandahar air base and accurately hitting Taliban compounds resulting in numerous causalities.

NYT: Militants Set Fire to Military Convoy

A day after Pakistan closed a key supply route to NATO troops, suspected militants in Pakistan set fire to some 30 trucks carrying fuel to NATO forces. Earlier, NATO forces had killed three and wounded three Pakistani soldiers in a cross border raid.

Pakistan Closes Border Crossing to NATO

In retaliation for increased NATO strikes in its territory, Pakistan closed a critical border that supplies NATO troops in Afghanistan. Facing mounting pressures from the devastating flooding last summer as well as increased American drone attacks, the civilian and military leadership in Pakistan is in crisis.  This nuclear-armed country faces problems beyond its current leaders’ ability to respond.

Los Angeles Times: Deadliest Year in Afghan War

A helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan killed 9 troops.  Combat deaths increased dramatically in June and July with the “surge” in military personnel authorized by President Obama.
